The mission of Murphysboro Main Street, Inc. is to recognize and promote the historic, cultural, social and economic significance of downtown Murphysboro, and to educate the community to the benefits of its preservation, through the involvement of the entire community.
Public Art
As part of its efforts to enhance the downtown area, Main Street commissions works of public art showcasing some of the many artists who call Murphysboro and surrounding area their home. Smysor Plaza serves as the focal point of Murphysboro's downtown area, providing a pleasant spot to enjoy a break from shopping or work. The plaza surrounds a stunning fountain, initiated by Main Street, with support from the Elizabeth A. Smysor Trust, and executed by sculptor, John Medwedeff.
The Smysor Fountain stands 27 feet tall and weighs over 6,000 pounds. Other works by Medwedeff can be found in municipal, state, university, and museum collections throughout the US, including the Millennium Plaza Fountain in the Courthouse Square in Clarksville, Tennessee; the Halfside Jack archway adjacent to the entrance of the Illinois Artisans Building in Springfield; and Whirl, commissioned by urbanArt, a division of the Greater Memphis Arts Council.
Architectural Restoration & Adaptive Re-Use
Main Street serves as a vehicle to preserve Murphysboro's proud architectural heritage by working with community partners to give new life and purpose to buildings such as the Liberty Theater and Hamilton House.
Main Street initiates and sponsors landscape and streetscape projects throughout the downtown area including the decorative planters and banners that line Walnut Street. Currently Main Street is looking for donations to purchase additional planters.
Farmer's Market
Every Tuesday afternoon from mid-May to late October, Main Street sponsors a Farmer's Market in the parking lot behind the City Administration Building. Vendors offer a wide variety of locally grown produce, home-made baked goods and crafts. Market spaces are open to anyone on a first-come, first-serve basis and cost $5.00 a parking space.

Why You Should Become a Member of Main Street!
When downtown prospers, the entire community benefits. A healthy business atmosphere generates more revenue in the form of taxes. This will mean more jobs, which, in turn, will cause people to spend more money.
A healthy downtown also generates increased traffic and business, not only to the downtown, but to the entire community. It means increased tourism and better city services, and it helps to maintain the high standards of Murphysboro schools. With the addition of new businesses, residents will not have to travel out of town for so many products and services.
